• Defense: ‘Nabajatra’ and ‘Joyjatra’, Bangladesh’s First Submarines, Dock in Chittagong

A ship brought Bangladesh’s first submarines to Chittagong Port on Thursday evening, Port Secretary Omar Faruk told bdnews24.com.

The conventional submarines christened ‘Nabajatra’ and ‘Joyjatra’ were handed over to Bangladesh on Nov 14.

Chinese Rear Admiral Liu Zizhu handed the submarines over to Bangladesh Navy chief Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed during a ceremony at a Dalian city shipyard at Liaoning province.

At the programme, Admiral Nizamuddin said the Bangladesh Navy had commenced its journey as a 'three-dimensional' force after acquiring the two submarines.

He praised China for furbishing the submarines and training their crew.

‘Nabajatra’ and ‘Joyjatra’ are each 76 metres long and 7.6 metres wide.

The type 035G diesel electric submarines, armed with torpedoes and mines, are able to attack enemy ships and submarines, the ISPR said.

A 'sea trial' was held successfully following the training of navy officers and mariners for bringing the submarines to Bangladesh.
